Min: History and Portents Woven from Primary Sources

Working file — Zizhi Tongjian (primary) + Schafer (scholarly guide), integrated

Goal: build the political spine AND the portent catalog from the primary text (Sima Guang, Zizhi Tongjian, 1084), using Schafer (The Empire of Min, 1954) as the map to locations rather than as the source. Each portent gets its ORIGINAL wording, not Schafer's English paraphrase. Schafer demoted to guide.

Method note (honest constraint): ctext.org throws a CAPTCHA at automated access; Wikisource and mirror domains are cache-only or unreachable to direct fetch. Working route: targeted SEARCHES return real passages, corroborated across multiple independent mirrors (Wikisource, guoxuemi, 8bei8, taiji-shuguan). Each quoted passage below is cross-checked across ≥2 mirrors. Slower than pulling whole juan, but verifiable. Where only Schafer's paraphrase is available (not yet found in primary), it is MARKED as such.

THE 933 IMPERIAL DECLARATION — PRIMARY TEXT (the spine's keystone)

Zizhi Tongjian juan 278, Later Tang, Mingzong, Changxing 4 (癸巳 / 933 CE), first month. Confirmed identical across Wikisource, guoxuemi, and the ctext datawiki excerpt.

閩人有言真封宅龍見者,閩王延鈞更命其宅曰龍躍宮。遂詣寶皇宮受冊,備儀衛,入府,即皇帝位,國號大閩,大赦,改元龍啟;更名璘。追尊父祖,立五廟。以其僚屬李敏為左僕射、門下侍郎,其子節度副使繼鵬為右僕射、中書侍郎,並同平章事;以親吏吳勖為樞密使。唐冊禮使裴傑、程侃適至海門,閩主以傑為如京使;侃固求北還,不許。閩主自以國小地僻,常謹事四鄰,由是境內差安。

Working translation (ours, to refine): "A man of Min said [有言] there was a dragon seen at the Zhenfeng residence; the Min king Yanjun accordingly renamed that residence the Palace of the Dragon's Leap (龍躍宮). He then proceeded to the Baohuang ['Precious August'] Palace to receive the tablet [of investiture], arrayed the ceremonial guard, entered the headquarters, and took the imperial position — the dynastic name Great Min (大閩), a general amnesty, the era changed to Longqi ['Dragon Arises']; he changed his own name to Lin (璘). He posthumously honored his father and grandfather and established the five [ancestral] temples. He made his subordinate Li Min Left Vice-Director and Chancellery Vice-Director; his son, the military vice-commissioner Jipeng, Right Vice-Director and Secretariat Vice-Director, both concurrently Joint Managers of Affairs; and his trusted clerk Wu Xu, Privy Councillor. The Tang investiture-envoys Pei Jie and Cheng Kan had just arrived at Haimen; the Min ruler made Pei Jie his 'Envoy to the Capital'; Kan firmly requested to return north, [which was] not permitted. The Min ruler, considering his state small and his land remote (自以國小地僻), always served his neighbors carefully (常謹事四鄰), and by this his territory was relatively secure."

What the PRIMARY text gives that Schafer's English flattened — three weave-points:

  1. 有言 ("a man SAID") — Sima Guang frames the dragon as a report, a claim someone made, not a flat occurrence. The peddling thesis is in the chronicle's own grammar. Schafer's "a certain man reported the appearance of a dragon" preserves this, but the bare 有言 is sharper: the sighting enters the record already as hearsay-attributed. The historian does not vouch for the dragon; he records that someone said it. → This is the single most important weave-point. The backward-reading and the peddling thesis BOTH live in that verb.
  1. 改元龍啟 immediately after 即皇帝位 — the era-name change (Dragon Arises) is bound in the same sentence-breath as taking the imperial position. The dragon → the palace rename → the throne → the era-name are one continuous ritual act in the syntax. The sign is not decoration; it is load-bearing structure of the accession, exactly as the title-ladder thesis claims. And the name 龍啟 literally re-inscribes the 龍 (dragon) of the portent into the reign's time-name.
  1. 自以國小地僻,常謹事四鄰 — "considering his state small and his land remote, always served his neighbors carefully." The PERIPHERY-ANXIETY, stated by the source itself, in the very same passage as the imperial declaration. The huángdì claim and the smallness-confession sit side by side. This is the engine of the whole portent-density thesis (a house with the furthest to climb needs the most signs) — and here Sima Guang hands it to us directly: even in the act of declaring empire, the Min ruler knew the smallness of his ground. The grandiosity of the title and the modesty of the base, in one breath. GOLD for the "what is Min" section.

Note on the 933 sequence within juan 278: the dragon/declaration is dated 春正月 (first month, spring). The narrative then flows to 二月 (Meng Zhixiang in Shu), Liangzhou, the Dingnan succession (Li Yichao), Meng Zhixiang made King of Shu (癸亥). The EARTHQUAKE/abdication (Schafer 278.6b, "May 31, 933") sits later in the juan — to be extracted; Schafer's paraphrase stands until the primary line is found.


THE EARTHQUAKE / ABDICATION — STILL SCHAFER-ONLY (flag)

Schafer p. 106: "Soon after his accession Yen-chün felt obliged to resign the throne temporarily in view of a cosmic hint in the form of an earthquake, his avowed purpose being 'to cultivate the Way.' This was on May 31, 933." (TCTC 278.6b; "Cf. his earlier retirement discussed under Taoism.")

→ The primary line (likely containing 地震 + 遜位/遜于位 + 修道 or 損己 language) NOT yet extracted. NEXT EXTRACTION TARGET. The phrase "to cultivate the Way" almost certainly contains 道. Do not finalize the Daoist reading on the original until the line is in hand.


THE PURPLE FUNGUS — PRIMARY TEXT (the OPENING portent, in original wording)

Zizhi Tongjian juan 271 (後梁紀, ~921 CE). Confirmed on Wikisource.

初,閩王審知承製加其從子泉州刺史延彬領平盧節度使。延彬治泉州十七年,吏民安之。會得白鹿及紫芝,僧浩源以為王者之符,延彬由是驕縱,密遣使浮海入貢,求為泉州節度使。事覺,審知誅浩源及其黨,黜延彬歸私第。

Working translation: "Earlier, the Min king Shenzhi, acting on imperial authority, had appointed his nephew (從子) Yanbin, prefect of Quanzhou, as concurrent Military Commissioner of Pinglu. Yanbin governed Quanzhou for seventeen years, and officials and people were content under him. It happened that a white deer and a purple fungus were obtained (會得白鹿及紫芝); the monk Haoyuan took them to be a token of a kingly one (以為王者之符). Yanbin, by reason of this, became arrogant and unrestrained (驕縱), and secretly sent an envoy by sea to present tribute, seeking to be made Military Commissioner of Quanzhou (求為泉州節度使). When the matter came to light (事覺), Shenzhi executed Haoyuan and his clique (誅浩源及其黨) and demoted Yanbin to his private residence."

CORRECTIONS to the Schafer-based catalog entry #9:

  1. Name is 延彬 Yanbin (Wang Yanbin), and the relationship is nephew (從子) of Shenzhi, prefect of Quanzhou 17 years — not "Yen-pin... son." (Schafer p.106 had him as Shenzhi's "nephew and contemporary," so Schafer was right; our catalog compressed it.)
  2. The deer + fungus are the SAME entry (白鹿及紫芝 together), interpreted by monk Haoyuan (浩源) as 王者之符 "token of a kingly one."

The weave-point — the peddling thesis caught in the act: This is not merely "an omen was read and the claimant fell." The primary shows the omen was the OPENING MOVE in a concrete title-bid: emboldened by the sign, Yanbin secretly sought the 節度使 (Military Commissioner) title behind Shenzhi's back, via clandestine tribute to the Tang court. When exposed, the ruler executed the interpreter AND his whole party (誅浩源及其黨) and demoted the claimant. So:

→ This is the single cleanest "failed/peddled portent" in the whole catalog, and the primary text supplies the mechanism (the secret title-bid) that Schafer's English only implied. It belongs at or near the OPENING of the essay — the inverted-list structure can lead with 白鹿及紫芝 as bare data, then reveal in the walk-back that the fungus was a failed sales pitch for a commissionership that cost the monk his head.

Magnitude/rung note for Spine 2: the LOWEST rung-claim (節度使) here is supported by a MINOR-magnitude portent (deer + fungus, not a dragon). This FITS the magnitude-tracks-claim thesis: small claim, small sign. Contrast 933, where the HIGHEST claim (皇帝) gets the COSMIC sign (yellow dragon). The two ends of the ladder, two ends of the magnitude scale. The data is starting to confirm Spine 2 cleanly.


"HEAVEN IS SICK OF THE WANG CLAN" — PRIMARY TEXT (the inverse sign, the climax of the collapse)

Zizhi Tongjian juan 284 (後晉紀, 944 CE). Confirmed on Wikisource. Schafer's "Heaven loathes the Wang family..." = 天厭王氏.

閩拱宸都指揮使朱文進,閣門使連重遇,既弒康宗,常懼國人之討,相與結婚以自固。閩主曦果於誅殺…〔曦〕嘗酒酣誦白居易詩云:「惟有人心相對間,咫尺之情不能料。」因舉酒屬二人。二人起,流涕再拜,曰:「臣子事君父,安有他志!」曦不應。二人大懼。…文進、重遇使拱宸馬步使錢達弒曦於馬上,召百官集朝堂,告之曰:「太祖昭武皇帝,光啟閩國,今子孫淫虐,荒墜厥緒。天厭王氏,宜更擇有德者立之。」眾莫敢言。

Working translation (the proclamation): "…[They] sent the Gongchen cavalry-and-foot commander Qian Da to murder Xi upon his horse, summoned the hundred officials to assemble in the court hall, and announced to them: 'Taizu the Glorious-Martial Emperor illumined and founded the state of Min; now his descendants are debauched and cruel (淫虐), and have let the inheritance fall to ruin (荒墜厥緒). Heaven is sick of the Wang clan (天厭王氏); it is fitting to choose anew one of virtue and establish him (宜更擇有德者立之).' None of the assembled dared speak (眾莫敢言)."

The weave-point — the inverse sign as the Mandate-formula run in reverse: This is the climactic mirror of the 933 dragon. Where the dragon was the sign of the Mandate ARRIVING (read forward into the era-name), 天厭王氏 is the sign of the Mandate DEPARTING — and the primary shows it is spoken in the EXACT liturgical structure of Mandate-transfer:

This is precisely Schafer's p.105 phrase — "divine discontent with the reigns of incumbents" — but the primary gives the whole formula, and it is the SAME apparatus that issued the dragon, now turned against the dynasty by its killers. The legitimation-machine and the regicide-machine are one machine.

眾莫敢言 ("none dared speak") — the binding-thesis, collapse-end version. The formula is unanswerable not because anyone believes the regicides but because contradicting "Heaven is sick of the Wangs" over the still-warm body is suicide. The sign is irrefutable by FORCE, not by truth. This is the exact binding from the 933 essay (the emperor who cannot refuse the earthquake-reading) seen from the other end: here it is the COURT that cannot refuse the regicides' reading. Whoever holds the standing to make the reading makes it stick; everyone else is silent. The reading-function has changed hands by murder, and the apparatus certifies the new holder.

The Bai Juyi couplet (惟有人心相對間,咫尺之情不能料) — a gift. Sima Guang stages Wang Xi, drunk, reciting "only in the space between human hearts, the feelings of inches cannot be fathomed" and toasting the two men he suspects — who weep and protest loyalty and then murder him days later. The poetry-recitation as a veiled accusation, the false tears, the toast: this is novelistic, and it shows the chronicle itself doing literary work. (Note: do NOT over-quote Bai Juyi; one line max, it's his.) Possible epigraph or scene-anchor.

POLITICAL SPINE — to build from juan 278/279/282-284

The succession thicket, to be filled from primary text. Skeleton from Schafer + Table B:

NOTE the primary already corrects/sharpens one thing: in the 933 passage, son Jipeng (繼鵬) is ALREADY installed as Right Vice-Director and Joint Manager — so the man who would assassinate Yanjun in 935 was, in 933, his father's right hand. The patricide is foreshadowed structurally in the appointments. Weave-point.

WEAVE PRINCIPLE (how history + portents integrate)

The essay alternates: primary political passage → its embedded portent in original wording → the weave-point (what the Chinese shows that English hid). The 有言 verb, the periphery-confession, the era-name re-inscription are the model: the primary text is not just more authoritative, it CARRIES THE ARGUMENT in its grammar. Schafer told us where to look; Sima Guang shows us the apparatus reading itself, in the act.
